Ethical Search Engine Optimisation UK

Posted by – September 15, 2009

Search Engine Optimisation is carried out to gain higher rankings for a website. To do this, the site’s existing pages are modified so that they match search engine’s ranking algorithm. SEO is a time intensive and a long term procedure and takes time in delivering concrete results.

Ethical search engine optimisation is following SEO practices that are acceptable to the search engines. Unethical practices include creating link farms, building doorway or cloaking pages, purchasing links, using multiple domains with similar content, and using automated software to trick the search engines. These unethical practices produce contrary results and harm the website in the long run.

When SEO is carried out while working with the search engines and by abiding by the search engine rules, these practices are termed as ethical SEO practices. Semantic SEO is also one of the ethical SEO techniques that are recognized by the search engines.

Semantic based Search Engine Optimisation or Latent Semantic Indexing is a technique where first the content is carefully analyzed to sort out a list of keywords that are used for SEO purposes instead of focusing on a single keyword. This is done to ensure the relevancy of the content when it is displayed in the browser. As all the major search engines recognize semantic SEO, it helps to rank the website naturally in the search engines. It is a safer technique to use and much preferred than the Spam techniques, which can get your website penalised.

If you are serious about online marketing of your site, products and services in World Wide Web then Search engine optimisation is a must. Top Search Engine Optimisation Tips

Posted by – September 14, 2009

Long gone are the days when a company could simply build a website and expect it to perform well. This is especially true in the world of e-commerce and on-line sales, where competition can be fierce. In modern times every website launched will need to take advantage of the services offered by a search engine optimisation(SEO) firm to ensure its ultimate success. However what about those business owners who are not able to afford the services of an SEO professional at first? Surely there are some basic steps that can be taken to ensure that a website is optimized for search engines? Below we will present some basic search engine optimization tips for the layman.

Domain name and URL – Always make sure that your domain name is indicative of the services you offer. Quite simply an online camera store using the domain name wesellstuff.com would do far less well than one which employed the domain name camerasforsale.com if both were the same age and had the same amount of promotion and SEO performed on them. In a similar fashion it is important that the page URLs within the site structure are relevant. Using the camera shop as an example again http://www.camerasforsale.com/discount_slr_cameras.htm would be far better than http://www.camerasforsale.com/cams?123.

META data – All page titles, META descriptions and META tags should be 100% relevant to the pages. Page titles are especially important and fall a close second behind the domain name and URL structure in being the most effective SEO techniques to use. When it comes to the META keywords do not be tempted to stuff this string with too many keywords. Keep the list of key phrases short and always remember that the most weight is given to the key phrases at the left hand end of the string, with the weight diminishing moving to the right.

Content is king – Make sure that your website content is refreshed regularly. Regular and new content is the best way to keep the search engines coming back to index your site, as well as ensuring that the likes of Google, Yahoo and MSN see your website as not being stagnant, hence more likely to be returned higher in the search engine ranking position. Fresh content is also a great way to gain new visitors and hopefully a good selection of organic backlinks over time.

Start link building – One of the main tasks performed by a search engine organization company is the building of backlinks. These links directly affect how popular the major search engines deem your site to be. This in turn affects the likelihood of your site being returned high in search engine results.

So there we have it, three very simple tips designed to give the SEO layman a few ideas upon how best to tackle top level SEO for any website. Although these tips only scratch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the techniques employed by a professional search engine optimisation firm, they are among the most successful techniques employed.

Using Search Engine Optimisation Effectively

Posted by – September 12, 2009

Search Engine optimisation can change your business forever. It can mean the difference between having a website and having a successful website. A good search engine optimisation plan can bring your website some much needed life into it.

A website that has used search engine optimisation properly will not only be much easier to find but it will also make your website faster as well as smarter and to top it off a lot more profitable than before. You need a search engine optimisation plan that focuses on certain keywords within your website and makes your website easier to see for the search engines.

Making your site better with search engine optimisation has a huge wealth of all kinds of advantages. To start with and the most important factor is that it increases your visibility within then search engines; this then in turn makes your website more accessible to clients and relevant traffic.

The term search engine optimisation is the sometimes complicated but if done right simple process of making your website search engine friendly. It does this is two ways; in a technical manner and in a content manner as well.

Usually making your website more search engine friendly includes a few things that need to be done. A search engine optimisation plan would have to include the changing of your title tags and Meta tags within the website. Also the template of your website can have a factor on your search engine optimisation plan and so can the navigation.

Where your titles are concerned within your website they can be very effective within your search engine optimisation plan. Your title tag only needs to have your main keyword within it. This will make it more effective within the search engines. Every page on your website can have a title tag; make them as relevant to that particular page as you can. You are trying to optimise your website and make it fit entirely within your niche. Do not be tempted to put catchy phrases or gimmicks within the title tag. Make it as clean as possible and make it relevant, doing this properly will ensure that your search engine optimisation plan is going to succeed in the long run.

Moving on from the title tags and onto keywords; you have to have relevant and useful keywords for your website. Think about it logically; what would you search for in a search engine if you were looking for similar services or products? Instead of just having keywords, try using key phrases as well. This will benefit your search engine optimisation plan hugely.

When you have decided on your keywords then you need to incorporate them into your text. The text on your website should be relevant to the products or the services that you are going to offer and make sure you fit plenty of keywords into the text you write. Search engine optimisation plans that are successful are more or less purely based on keywords and key phrases; this is why they are so important to get right.

You should always add new information onto your website on a regular basis; not only will this help your search engine optimisation plan but it will also keep your clients and customers happy and informed of new products and services etc.

Try to just have your website associated around one particular theme; if you have too many different things on your website it makes it difficult for the search engines to read and then sort according to your keywords and key phrases.

Search engine optimisation is not a quick process, but done right it can make the world of difference!

Link Building: Bouncing Google PageRank Back to Your Web Site with Squidoo

Posted by – September 9, 2009

Here is one powerful way you can incorporate Squidoo and similar types of web sites into your search engine optimization and promotion campaign. This concept, which I’m referring to as “bouncing,” is sound for any of the major search engines because they all take links into account when ranking web sites.

In a nutshell, this is the process of linking to a high PageRank web site that also links back to your web site. The purpose is to help Google or another search engine spider find the site, so that it can then find the link back to your site. It probably seems much like link swapping, but we are mainly concerned with certain types of web sites where we control the process of placing a link back to our web site.

This strategy works with social bookmarking sites like Delicious and Digg, as well as sites like Squidoo that allow you to post HTML content. Social bookmarking has incredible power if you systematically bookmark high quality content on your web site. If your content is good enough, you can grow your links exponentially.

The remainder of this article will deal with Squidoo. It lets you create pages (called “lenses” in Squidoo terminology) with links to anything you want, and you have complete control of the content on those pages. Google indexes and ranks Squidoo pages with much enthusiasm, and the site’s home page has a very high PageRank. Certain other pages in Squidoo, such as lists of tags, also tend to have high PageRank.

Remember, PageRank is spread from site to site via links (unless the links are “nofollow” links). Squidoo tags pages, which are pages that list keywords people have used to categorize their Squidoo lenses, can have high PageRank values. The tags pages link to a list of pages that use those tags, with those pages in turn linking to the Squidoo lenses that use those tags. So PageRank can be passed from the tags page, to a list of sites, to your Squidoo lens. You can then place a link on your Squidoo lens to your web site. Your Squidoo lenses will also have a list of tags which link to the tags pages.

So the “bouncing” referred to above refers to the process of placing a link from your web site or blog to your Squidoo lens (or another Squidoo page), so that search engine spiders can make their way from your web site to Squidoo and back to your web site, at which point you hopefully pick up some PageRank passed back from Squidoo.

If your main site is not indexed in Google or in another particular search engine, then this strategy does not work. The search engine needs to find your site to begin with, unless it finds your Squidoo lens first and finds your site that way, which would be great but not really a “bounce.” Your Google rankings will improve as you bounce search engine spiders to other web sites, only to have them bounce right back, passing PageRank along with them.

Marketing Automation

Posted by – July 2, 2009

Whatever size of organisation you’re working in, generating leads, handling leads and managing the final sell can be one of the most difficult things to get right.

When you’re working in a large organisation it gets even more difficult to manage as multiple stakeholders will interrupt the lead and sales process any number of times.

I used to work for a large software house in the marketing department, and I speak from experience when I say that marketing and sales teams have two completely different agendas when it comes to the effective handling of leads.

This type of situation is where marketing automation technology/software can come into play and aid in the effective management of the lead generation cycle. Lead scoring, pipelining and relationship building become a breeze when you’ve got the right workflow and everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet.

In todays pressured sales and marketing departments, it makes sense to get more organised with such valuable data!

Tips For Running An Effective Email Marketing Campaign

Posted by – June 30, 2009

Matthew Henderson asked:

It seems that what emerged as sound email principles and etiquette apply just as well to email marketing. But its not just email marketing… it’s effective email marketing.

Where previously formal letters and faxes used to be the way to communicate with clients and potential customers, the shift to the ’softcopy’ world of the Web has meant that this same type of communication would have to happen in a format pertinent to this new venue. Email and email marketing asserted itself as the prime method of contact then. From brochures to customer support, everything can now take place through a few types on the keyboard and few clicks of the mouse.

However, there still is a protocol and a proper manner for effective email marketing:

- Be clear

Email is a shortened form of communication. There is no space for flowery and overtly ego-soothing language. Basic courtesy applies, like proper greetings and such, but on the whole, emails should be short and clear. Get to the point as soon as possible. Let your recipient know what is expected of him, what he stands to gain through this communication, and how he can gain it (for example, what he has to do, such as be within the first hundred to visit a site and thus earn a discount)

- Offer value, not information

Provide incentive for the email reader to read and click through. Add value to your communication. Attract and seduce. Don’t be surprised a boring, hum-drum email is deleted as soon as the recipient reads the first few lines. Entice, and do not provide too much information in the content. The website is there for this purpose. The email is for communication.

- Prefer text

Graphics take long to load and often emails with graphics and attachments are deleted immediately or go to a junk mail folder.

- Label your images if you use them.

Some people get only the text in an email in their browser. If you include graphics but fail to label them, the whole message may not make sense or the reader may not be enticed. Providing labels lets him know what stands at such a place in the message.

- Use a hook

You should aim to catch the attention of your reader from the first line itself. A good hook works then. Its message should be relevant and clear so that the customer can then immediately decide to read on or not. Remember that a reader is won through the first few lines itself.

- Support the hook

In the body of your email, use relevant information to support your hook and its message. However, be concise, as this isn’t an opportunity for an info dump. Your information should simply reinforce your hook.

- Be short and concise

Readers won’t read every word that is down in an email. They usually scan the thing in whole. Use the space you have succinctly to maximize the opportunity to grasp the reader.

- Provide the most important information first

Make efficient use of the top space of your email. Many readers read email through a preview pane. The top third of your email will be displayed in this pane, and based on this information, a reader may decide to read the full or delete the message already.

- Use a legible and easy to grasp format

- Arrange your text in a manner that is pleasant to the eye.

- Delineate text and paragraphs using hyphens or lines.

- Use legible font such as Georgia and Verdana in a readable size.

- Use bullets and lists to more clearly define your message so it can be grasped at first glance.

- Use the active voice

The active voice ‘involves’ the reader in the message and pushes him to react.

- Know your audience

And write accordingly with appropriate wording and information.

- Avoid URLs that are too long

Such addresses in emails can be difficult to click as they lose their link when they are ‘broken’ onto 2 or more lines.

Aim to have a URL on its own line. If needed, shrink the text for the link. Or you can offer the address without a hyperlink but as a ‘copy and paste’ option.

- Avoid caps and excessive use of punctuation marks

That’s basic email etiquette, which carries forward into your business communication.

- Offer an option to unsubscribe

Always offer a ‘way out’ for your recipients. An unsubscribe link is expected to be seen at the bottom of the email.

Providing your recipient with the option to continue receiving emails or to terminate the reception shows caring and courtesy to the reader.

Also ensure that an unsubscription is effective immediately.

- Easy to subscribe as well

Make it easy to subscribe as well. Provide links and offer a way to your guest book or how to provide comments and feedback. This shows consideration on your behalf.

It is also a good idea to let your readers know that they are free to forward the email as well.

- Make it easy to change subscription address

This way, if a client or recipient changes his address, he can make sure the email follows as well.

- Make good use of your subject line

The headline of your message should go in the subject box, as this is the first glimpse recipients will have to your email. Use it judiciously to convey information.

- Address your recipients by their name

This shows consideration and a personal touch. You definitely win over more people through a personalized message than through an impersonal mass bundling.

- Avoid in holiday periods

This time is often holiday from emails too, so keep email marketing communications to the minimum too.

You could however send out a message with the holiday’s greetings and best wishes.

- Consistency with corporate design

Having the same kind of layout and formatting as your website and other business communication supports ensures that someone recognizes your email at first glance too.

Once you have found the right template/format, use it every time.

- An email address that says who you are

People are more apt to trust a message with a From line containing information about who you are and where you’re from. This will also prevent your email from being listed as spam and from ending in the junk email folder.

- The landing page should fit the email and the offer

Make sure you are leading your reader to the right destination through the links provided in the message.

People hate wasting their time, and if this happens even once, you stand the risk of losing credibility.

By tailoring your landing page for links, you also make better use of your website to further engage the customer’s interest.

- Motivate newsletter sign up with a freebie or bonus

Offer something in return as an incentive. This could win you a lot of new subscriptions.

- Have good multimedia if you are using it

If you are using audio or video, make sure they are of good quality and can be accessed easily.

- Reply to requests within 24 hours

This is basically common courtesy but it pays to be recalled. Ensuring prompt replies show you care and value your customers.

- Email should be service oriented, not marketing oriented as with paper

Your aim through email marketing is to inform and provide an ‘easy’ access to your company.

- Customize so it doesn’t look like spam

Make sure your message is unique in its content and format so it isn’t brushed off as spam.

- Offer user control if possible

Wherever possible, give your reader the opportunity to tailor your communications to him. People are most apt to listen to the information they have asked for.

- Provide contact information for you

Always provide a way of contacting you. The signature in emails is one of your greatest effective email marketing assets.

By making use of these email marketing tips, you should be able to create a successful and effective email marketing campaign.

Great PR and publicity stunts

Posted by – June 29, 2009

I’ve always been a fan of Public Relations as a means to raising the profile of a business or website. Ever since my early forays into press release writing and distribution to the local papers, I’ve been at it - and with some good results (mentions on popular ITV shows and features in business text books). The thing is, you’ve just got to get out there and do it!

I’ve seen public relations used in so many different ways, in the last company I worked with, their PR budget was 3 times the online and and direct marketing budget combined.

Anyway - I’ve digressed - which, for those of you who know me, will probably not be much of a surprise. I’ve just been doing some brainstorming on a new project. We’re on a pretty tight budget to be honest so we’re looking allover for inspiration to help us get some decent publicity.

One of the best sources I’ve found so far has been Taylor Herring’s 50 top publicity stunts post from earlier in the year. It’s one of my faves and I’m constantly referring my clients to the ideas in it. The post has such a thorough rundown of great publicity stunts, and with a bit of creativity and imagination there are some ideas there that you can use for all kinds of clients, on all kinds of budget.

OK, so most of the events here are from the big hitters and will need some serious capital to pull off - but open your mind up and think outside the box and I’m sure you’ll be able to think of something.

Incidentally, it’s worth mentioning that the blog over at Taylor Herring is and absolutely fantastic example of blogging for business. Open and direct, and full of usefull information from a well respected PR agency specialising in the likes of film PR and music PR.

My personal faves in this post include 1600 paper mache panders in Paris, Tiger Woods T-ing off the talest freestanding hotel in the world, and Richard Branson (perhaps the king of corporate PR) donning a wedding dress for the launch of Virgin Brides.

Enjoy.
