You have heard of SEO, Video SEO, and keyword optimisation.  Now you have the opportunity to learn about image optimisation.  Image optimisation is using the right images on your website in the right ways.  Oftentimes website creators choose images they think will generate interest, but it doesn’t always have a purpose regarding the site.  When you take up space with an image it takes a larger file to download for the consumer.  The more images you have the longer your site will take to download.  Google bots will find trouble in downloading your page and you could find that your site is not in the top results.

In order to correct this problem you have to have the right image optimisation.  This means offering the images that pertain to your site.  Image optimisation is not just about getting the right images.  It is also about using relevant keywords when you name the image files.  In other words choose a word that will be searched for.  Include the Alt Text in your image, and overall make sure the images work.  Too often a misstep in placing the image online will make the picture unattainable.  So always double check your image optimisation.

How I got paid $250 for reporting an Adsense Cheater!

Let me tell you a story about karma and how I made $250 by reporting an Adsense cheater!

It started when I came upon a web site where some kid was blatantly breaking the rules by asking his buddies to click on his Adsense ads.

This has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves! Why do people think they can break the rules at the expense of other peoples’ AdWords budgets?

So I did what a lot of people do… I contacted Google!

I figured Google would shut this punk down immediately. Boy was I wrong!

Every time I went back to this kid’s web site the message asking his friends to click the ads were still there! This went on for a few weeks and I really started to get ticked off at the lack of response on Google’s part.

So I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I used this software I created called “Google Sponsor Lister” (You can get it at AdsenseSchool.com) to find every sponsor who was targeting this kid’s niche.

I contacted each sponsor directly and told them there was a chance their ads were being displayed on a cheater’s site. I figured if THEY complained to Google, something would happen!

Well I guess I was right! One of the sponsors emailed me back two days later and said:

“I want to thank you for pointing out the kids clicking on my ads. I turned it over to my Google rep, and he called today to let me know Google is disabling their account. Also, he said Google is crediting me a decent amount for fraudulent clicks over the last quarter. What’s your address? I’d like to send you a little thank you gift.”

How awesome is that? I was so excited! Not because he was going to send me a “thank you gift”… but because I figured out how to get that punk’s shut down!

It’s funny how Google shut this kid down in TWO DAYS because a sponsor contacted them but when I had been trying for weeks, nothing happened. Makes you think…

Anyway… I told him he didn’t have to thank me and he definitely didn’t need to send me a gift. I was just happy to know I saved him a couple bucks and this punk got his account canceled.

He replied with the following…

“Thanks again. I actually spend several hundred thousand dollars a month on Google, so at least they responded to me quickly. Also, the rebate they gave me was fairly substantial (several thousand). I’d really like to buy you an Amazon gift certificate or an iPod or something if you’d like to tell me how to send it to you, because I don’t think I would have been proactive about this if you hadn’t contacted me. Either way, it’s great that you’re being a good samaritan.”

SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS? I thought I saved him a couple bucks at most!

I was floored when I read that because I knew Adsense cheaters hurt sponsors but I never thought it was that bad!

So I told him if he REALLY wanted to send me an iPod or an Amazon gift certificate, I wouldn’t stop him! ;-)

He ended up sending me an Amazon.com gift certificate worth $250!

Long story short… I am now a true believer in Karma! :-D

I think this teaches us a couple important lessons…

First, telling Google about Adsense cheaters is fruitless… but informing the sponsors, and asking them to contact Google, works immediately!

And second, ripping off AdWords sponsors is big business. Don’t think for a second it’s a victimless crime!

Oh and now I’m a true believer in Karma!

Maybe you won’t make $250… but at the very least you’ll help get rid of another Adsense thief and save a business owner some money

Let’s face it… Google Adwords is not the only source of traffic on the internet, nor is it free. However, if you cannot convert the traffic you get from the pay-per-click traffic on Google Adwords, your site surely won’t convert the casual visitor who may or may not be ready to buy what your are selling.

When spending money for pay-per-click (PPC) traffic, whether it is from Google Adwords, Overture, or a 2nd-tier PPC network, the key is to track your traffic to see if it converts into sales. Many people that have tried Google Adwords have lost their shirt, so to speak. Some keywords on Google Adwords are cheap (keyword phrases start at a nickel per click). Some keyword phrases on Google Adwords can cost tens of dollars per click. If you end up paying high per-click prices on Google Adwords and don’t sell a high-ticket item on your site, even the most enviable sales conversion rate won’t turn a profit.

There are several tricks to advertising on Google Adwords that unless you know them, it becomes almost impossible to turn a profit on your advertising.

Secret #1 - Only bid on exact match keywords

Google Adwords has a few different ‘keyword matching options’ available. When a keyword is placed in brackets like this: [keyword], it is called an ‘exact match.’ This means that only when someone enters that EXACT keyword phrase will your ad appear. It might occur to you that by limiting your keyword(s) to only exact match, you are eliminating all those people that may be searching for the phrase “cheap widgets” or even “widget” singular, since only the keyword “widgets” plural is an exact match. Believe me, this is exactly what you want. Sure, it will take extra time to create an adgroup within the Google Adwords system for each keyword phrase you want to bid on, but you will know with 100% certainty which keyword(s) are converting into sales this way. If you do NOT use the exact match option in Google Adwords, then there is absolutely no way to know which keyword(s) are resulting in sales on your site.

Secret #2 - Bid to be in position #2 or 3

When someone searches on Google for your keyword, the first page of search results are going to reach the most people. What you want to do is position your ad in one of the top 3 spots. You don’t want position #1 necessarily, because that position costs the most and doesn’t give you much more benefit than being in position 2 or 3. You pay less for these spots than position 1 and gain most of the benefit.

By being in one of these top spots, your ad gets a higher ‘click-thru rate’ (CTR). This is good is because the Google Adwords system actually rewards you for having an ad with a high CTR by charging you less per click! Google Adwords exists to make money for Google. If they have two companies advertising for the same keyword, and your ad pulls a 10% CTR and your competitor’s ad for the same keyword pulls a 5% CTR, then Google Adwords makes more money from your ad. Google Adwords rewards you for this higher CTR by charging you less per click than your competitor!

Secret #3 - Negatively qualify your ads

Admittedly, the problem with having an ad that has a great CTR is that it gets a lot of clicks! Unless your traffic converts into sales, it’s hard to turn a profit on your Google Adwords ads. The key is to put words in the ad that DISCOURAGE people from clicking on the ad unless they ‘pre-qualified’ to convert to a sale. For example, if you have site that sells widgets that cost $10.00 each, then put something in one of the lines of text in your ad like ‘Widgets cost only $10.00.’ The only catch is that if your ad isn’t getting a very good CTR in the first place, then a negative qualifier is only going to reduce your CTR.
